Urban Lightscapes is a collaborative european programme for the formation of urban lighting and its influence on the change of the cities’ identity. As a creative dialogue on public lighting and urban space, this project had Athens as a starting point and the Urban Lightscapes Symposium in Onassis Cultural Centre, Barcelona as a stopover with the three-day experimentation workshop in IAAC (Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia), and Maastricht as final destination, with the two light installations in the neighborhoods of Wyckerpoort and Mariaberg.
Due to this project, for the first time, Greece is at the centre of a multi-collective European action of light experimentation that embraces visual and urban lighting with architecture and active citizenship. The project started in November 2013, designated as the European Year of Citizens and is concluded in the spring of the International Year of Light.
In this context of the closure of the action, Beforelight proceeded to the realization of this publication, which apart form an holistic documentation of the project, is an open discussion on the blending of urban and artistic lighting design. This book is enriched with contributive texts of academics, artists and lighting designers who were involved in a creative way in the three actions of this project.
The discussion will be held by Poka-Yio, artist and curator, co-director of Athens Biennale, Matina Maglara, architecture lighting designer and consultant, Dimitris Koliadimas, founder of Semiotik Design Agency that undertook the graphic design of this publication and Mary Karatza, strategic designer and co-founder of the cluster Place Identity.
This publication was realized under the kind support of the organization:
